BASEBALL’S GREATEST SCANDAL

One of the most notorious scandals in American history comes to life in this new major league opera. The 1919 Chicago White Sox were arguably the best team in the game, but they were also the most poorly paid, always at odds with their penny-pinching owner. Resentment, revenge, and ambition gone awry motivate eight players to conspire with gamblers and fix the World Series. Featuring a lyrical, poetic score and legendary figures from baseball, The Fix is a tale of epic proportions about betting against the establishment, all set against the backdrop of America’s favorite pastime.

TO LIVE AND DIE FOR LOVE

Verdi’s sumptuous melodies and timeless depiction of tragic love have made La Traviata an undeniable favorite for generations. Violetta, a glamorous courtesan, gives up everything for her devoted lover Alfredo—only to have their idyllic affair shattered by the stern demands of Alfredo’s father. From the frenzy of Violetta’s pleasure-filled life to her heart-wrenching decision to leave her beloved, Verdi’s treasured opera is a captivating tribute to what it means to live and die for love.

In this hilarious nod to The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro, the ghost of Marie Antoinette is upset about her untimely ending, so her favorite playwright, Beaumarchais, attempts to amuse her with a new work. He produces an opera within the opera starring Figaro, Count Almaviva and Susanna, who try to save the queen from her beheading in a fast-moving and tuneful production.

“It’s comic and serious, entertaining and erudite, silly and thoughtful, emotional and mysterious, harrowing and uplifting, intimate and over-the-top — and the more times you see it, the more you’ll find in it and the more you’ll get out of it. It helps to be an opera or history buff to get all of the references, reminiscences and send-ups, but it’s not necessary.”  – Richard S. Ginell, LA Times

Presented in English with projected English text.

The Parisian courtesan Violetta leaves a life of extravagance when she falls in love with Alfredo. But soon she is forced to make a terrible choice. With showpiece arias such as “Sempre libera” and its touching story, La traviata is one of the most beloved works in the operatic canon. After 10 years, the opera returns to the Glimmerglass stage in a stunning co-production with Washington National Opera.

“I believe this opera is musically and dramatically just about perfect. Every character we encounter sings music that is thrilling, dramatic and true to their soul.” – Francesca Zambello, director

Noah

A one-act opera by the British composer Benjamin Britten. First performed on 18 June 1958 at that year's Aldeburgh Festival, it is based on the 15th-century Chester "mystery" or "miracle" play which recounts the Old Testament story of Noah's Ark

Noye's Fludde was composed as a project for television; to the Chester text Britten added three congregational hymns, the Greek prayer Kyrie eleison as a children's chant, and an Alleluia chorus. A large children's chorus represents the pairs of animals who march into and out of the ark, and proceedings are directed by the spoken Voice of God. Of the solo sung roles, only the parts of Noye (Noah) and his wife were written to be sung by professionals; the remaining roles are for child and adolescent performers.
